Short or long fiction. My investment can merely be line editing/copyediting, or it can be dialed up to address thematic concerns, structure, language, style, depth, research, and overall effectiveness as a piece of fiction. Or I can merely provide a general evaluation of the material with broad suggestions for improvement. If you’re about to start pitching material to agents, you don’t want to torpedo yourself out of the gate because of easily catchable mistakes.
Nonfiction and journalism. Here, I can do anything from line editing to providing additional research, looking for gaps in logic and detail, reworking structure, and suggesting appropriate publications to target. These can be reported features, essays, humor pieces, blog posts, news items, passionate screeds, whatever — it’s all writing.
Research. I love doing research and filling in unique detail. This may naturally become part of some other work I’m doing for you, or you can hire me simply to supply added material to you for your piece.
Creativity coaching. Just about every creative person I’ve ever met benefits from pop-in collaborators or creative colleagues with no personal stake in the work with whom they can vet and develop ideas now and then. This is especially true of those young in years or young in craft, who can accelerate and augment their talents by having an experienced, generous, independent mind brought to bear on their creative efforts and attitudes. This can come in the form of encouragement, concrete wisdom and advice, suggestions for reading/studying, and specific guidance with regard to direction or approach. I’ve received a lot of this piecemeal from a variety of people over the years, but no one focused solely on my work. I can be that person.
Temporary help. If you’re going to be without a staff editor for a finite, short-term period of time, allow me to fill in. I’m accessible, adaptable, and at your service. You can slot me into your structure and watch the copy flow unhindered.
Editorial consulting. I’m an idea man, so I can help strategize and supply content for whichever mode you use — website, newsletter, blog, PR machinery, etc.
College essays. Everyone loves writing college essays — said no one ever. I’m here to help with ideas, strategies, topics, language, encouragement, and, of course, copyediting. Simple mistakes can derail a reader’s interest in an otherwise noteworthy piece of writing — don’t let it happen to you!
Website copy. As a consumer, nothing turns me off a site or brand faster than obvious spelling and grammar mistakes right on the landing page (or anywhere, really). Let me quickly run through your text before you go live (and then again after) to make sure you aren’t launching with easily fixed language blunders that will scare off customers and followers.
Restaurant menus. Perhaps you believe that the mistakes on your menu are charming, and if so I won’t argue with you. But if you suspect even a little that diners would prefer a mistake-free menu to peruse and salivate over, then I’m your guy. This is a bit of a personal obsession with me, so really, you’re doing me a favor.
Potpourri! I’m a pretty open-minded guy, and I love a challenge. You want copy to accompany your paintings? Creative, idiosyncratic wedding vows? A spoken intro for your improv group? An interview with your dying grandmother? Try me! What do you need? (That’s word-oriented, I mean. Sadly, I am not the person who’s going to repair the dormers on your lovely, 19th-century Victorian.)
